Demographics in Clinical Trails
Demographics in clinical trials are factors that describe the participants in a study, such as their age, race, sex, and socioeconomic status. Demographic data is important because most clinical trials do not represent the general population, and there are consistent disparities in who is enrolled.

Here are some demographic disparities in clinical trials:

01
Race and ethnicity
Clinical trials often underrepresent people of color, especially Black and Hispanic patients. For example, in a 2020 FDA summary report, non-Hispanic white participants made up 78% of participants in U.S. clinical trials, even though they only make up 61% of the U.S. population.
02
Age
Clinical trials often underrepresent children and older adults.
03
Sex
Clinical trials often underrepresent women.
